I once had to change some traevl plans and ended up flying home through Venice. Because of the timing of flights and trains I arrived at 5 PM. By the time I got settled it was 7 PM (too late to see San Marco), and I had to leave at about noon the next day. Even though I’m sure the canals and enchanting buildings understood and forgave me, to me this very short stay was a travesty at best. However, some of the best short visits can involve nothing more than walking around, absorbing the local color. In both Venice (1999) and Rome (2010) this was the case. I discovered some enchanting niches that could easily have been overlooked in the shadow of the traditional larger sights. It was delightful to ride the vaporetti round and round and round. (The all-day transit pass is great!) The canal rides were made at night, and my active imagination conjured up the threads of a murder mystery set in the darkness of a small anonymous canale. Jane Langton wrote a pretty good one (Dante Game).
