Ancora un caso di cervelli italiani in fuga all’estero.
E’ della provincia di Benevento la giovane ingegnere che ha trovato successi alla Nasa negli Usa. Si chiama Maria Paola Clarizia è la più giovane della missione “Cygnss”, che si occupa di cicloni tropicali. “Al colloquio, quando ho detto che avevo un bimbo piccolo e non potevo trasferirmi negli Usa, non hanno fatto una piega”.– continua Maria Paola- Perché “l’importante è il risultato”.
Come riportato dal giornale Il fatto quotidiano, Maria Paola è la più giovane della missione “Cygnss” (Cycolne global navigation satellite system), formata da 15 operatori, tutti americani a parte lei, che lancerà otto micro satelliti a bassa orbita intorno alla Terra per capire come si formano i cicloni tropicali e migliorarne il metodo di previsione. “Adesso il nostro compito è misurare la forza dei venti durante gli uragani usando i segnali gps riflessi dalla superficie dell’oceano”. Un posto a distanza che non pesa a nessuno. Le hanno messo a disposizione una scrivania al National oceanography centre di Southampton, non deve timbrare il cartellino e gestisce il lavoro come le pare. “L’importante è portare a casa il risultato”, così le hanno detto. E ogni tre mesi viaggia negli States per fare il punto con il resto del team. “Tutto rimborsato ovviamente. I meeting si tengono ogni volta in città diverse, l’ultimo a Los Angeles, al Jet propulsion laboratory della Nasa, dove progettano le missioni per Marte, come Curiosity”. Tanto per intenderci.
Nata e cresciuta a Telese Terme, in provincia di Benevento, per arrivare dov’è oggi ha dovuto lasciare l’Italia più volte. La prima nel 2005, mentre frequentava la facoltà di Ingegneria delle telecomunicazioni. “Vinsi una borsa di studio per tre mesi in America, al California institute of technology, mi occupai di onde gravitazionali”. Poi quattro mesi nel Regno Unito, a Southampton, presso il National oceanography centre, per fare la tesi specialistica. “Qui ho studiato la tecnica di telerilevamento del mare tramite segnali gps. Ci sono ritornata anche dopo la laurea per seguire un Phd, dal 2008 al 2012”. Avrebbe potuto fare lo stesso all’Università di Benevento, ma “mi misero in guardia dicendomi che un dottorato in Italia al massimo vale per la carriera accademica, mentre all’estero ti apre anche opportunità in azienda”. Nel frattempo si innamora di un ricercatore italiano, arruolato a tempo indeterminato al centro di oceanografia. E rimane incinta. “Ho preso un assegno di maternità di sei mesi e l’istituto era attrezzato con sale per l’allattamento al seno”.
La famiglia continua a non essere un freno. Dopo il Phd si sposta a Barcellona. “Un’azienda mi ha assunto a tempo indeterminato. Nei fine settimana tornavo in Inghilterra da mio figlio e il mio compagno”. L’esperienza dura solo quattro mesi: “La Spagna è un paese instabile economicamente, sarebbe stato rischioso mollare l’Inghilterra e trasferirmi per sempre là con la famiglia”. Maria Paola torna di nuovo a fare la ricercatrice al centro di oceanografia. Passano tre mesi e si presenta l’occasione della sua vita. “Un professore del Michigan conosciuto a una conferenza un anno prima mi propone di collaborare alla missione Cygnss della Nasa”. Sappiamo come va a finire.
E dire che in Italia ci aveva provato a trovare un lavoro ma si è vista solo chiudere porte in faccia. “Ho inviato il cv a diverse aziende, università, perfino il Cnr ma nessuno ha risposto”. Ora ha poche speranze di poter rientrare nel suo Paese, se non in vacanza. “Mi piacerebbe lavorare all’Agenzia spaziale europea, c’è una sede a Frascati. Il problema è che più stai fuori e più è difficile inserirti. È paradossale, ma funziona così. Quando torni, anche se hai un cv bomba, anziché guadagnare punti, perdi il posto nella fila”.
